The Impact of Pass Plus on Car Insurance

The AA has reported that car insurance prices have risen by 40% in the past 12 months, with the average driver now paying £892 per year.

Young drivers have been particularly badly hit by these rises, with the average 18 year old male driver with a standard 1.25 litre Ford Fiesta likely to be facing premiums of about £6,000 on their first policy.

Research by moneysupermarket.com suggests that this is forcing a large number of young drivers off the road. However, Pass Plus advanced driving courses could be one solution which may help to make car insurance affordable for young and newly qualified drivers once more.

Pass Plus explained
Pass Plus is an advanced driving course which is available through Drive2Pass to all newly qualified motorists. It has been designed to help these motorists lower the cost of their first car insurance premium, with the government realising that the prices quoted for these motorists are unsustainable.

Car insurance companies discriminate against such drivers due to the increased statistical likelihood of them making a claim. However, you could reduce these odds with a Pass Plus qualification which will boost your levels of driving experience and therefore make it less likely that you will be involved in an accident.

Pass Plus courses consist of six modules cover things such as driving at night, in adverse weather conditions and on motor ways; all things which may not have been covered on your initial lessons. Contrary to popular belief there will be no test at the end of the course, by your instructor will monitor you throughout in order to ensure you reach the required level of competency.

You can book a six hour Pass Plus course through Drive2Pass for just £140.

The benefits of pass plus
Pass plus help newly qualified drivers to build up their levels of experience and therefore reduce the statistical likelihood of them being involved in an accident and making a claim. This will be recognised by most car insurance companies in the form of cheaper premiums.

The weight an insurer assigns to a Pass Plus qualification will vary, with savings between 5% and 35% possible depending on the insurance firm. This translates to a saving of between £300 and £2,100 for that average newly qualified male driver.

Female motorists save too
Female motorists stand to make a saving as well. Although they have traditionally faced cheaper premiums than male drivers, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) recently ruled that from 21st December 2012, car insurance companies will no longer be allowed to discriminate on the grounds of gender.

This could result in female prices rising by as much as 50%, but a Pass Plus qualification could help to counteract this. Make sure you make yourself a safer and more frugal driver with a Pass Plus qualification.
